Job Title: Supervisor-Nursing-perdiem

Experience:
BSN required. Nurse with at least 4-5 years progressive experience as a charge nurse or other leadership role. Past supervisory experience helpful. Background in critical care helpful, but not required. Must demonstrate excellence in interpersonal communication with many customers, both internal and external to the organization. Must posses strong critical thinking and problem solving skills. Must have current BLS CPR.

Description:
Must be able to work 1 8 hr weekend shift per 6 week time block. May have opportunity to pick up additional hours up to a total of 16 hours per week if desired.

As an extension of Nurse Manager, addresses staffing and unit concerns, patient satisfaction, and risk management issues. Reviews the staffing for the current and the following shifts. Guides the nursing staff to resolve staffing problems. Makes staffing decisions for upcoming shifts based on the needs of the entire hospital. Responds to requests from nursing staff to help resolve clinical, multidisciplinary and administrative problems. Collaborates with other departments in coordinating ancillary patient services as required during that shift. Oversees patient flow within ED, from ED to the units, and between units, to facilitate admissions and to insure appropriate bed assignments.

Provides counseling and/or discipline when necessary in the absence of the Nurse Manager and reports action taken to the Nurse Manger verbally or in writing. Interprets hospital policies for staff and providers as required. Conveys details of significant events/problems/patient satisfaction issues to the appropriate departments/manager or Administrator On-Call. In accordance with NYS regulations and Highland Hospital policy, assumes responsibility for: Oversight of organ/tissue donation process. Follow-up and communication regarding occurrence reports, including NYPORTS events. Responds to all Codes, performing as described in protocol and evaluating process. Communicates pertinent information or concerns to appropriate Nursing Director.

Maintains fiscal accountability as follows: (a)Staffing decisions support clinical needs and are fiscally responsible. (b) Operates department within budgeted staffing plans or justifies variances.

(c)Assists with budget and overtime monitoring per Nurse Managers' established guidelines. (d)Educates staff regarding budgetary impact of staffing decisions. Identifies educational needs of evening, night and weekend staff and works with Department of Education to address them. Assures the delivery of quality patient care through an understanding of and participation in the Nursing Department's Performance Improvement program. Provides input into staff performance evaluations at the request of the Nurse Manager.Sets and achieves realistic goals that are tied to hospital mission.Is self directed in pursuit of continuing education to improve own level of practice. Maintains clinical knowledge base: Identifies knowledge and skill needs through self-assessment, peer and supervisor review. Participates in ongoing educational pursuits to maintain and improve competence. Coordinates and provides formal and informal inservices based on needs assessment.Demonstrates initiative in obtaining and sharing information about professional issues. Is aware of emergency procedures, fire and safety guidelines for assigned area; takes responsibility to notify appropriate person(s) of any hazards.

Maintains safe environment by following all written standards and appropriately using reporting mechanisms.Demonstrates the ability to care adult to geriatric patients. Proactively avoids potential risk situations.
